With the prevalence and increasing incidence of drug-related cases on the job, drug testing in the workplace has become top priority for managements of companies all over the world.
Most companies make use of the standard 5-panel test for incidence of street drugs, composed of marijuana (THC), PCP, opiates such as codeine and morphine, amphetamines including methamphetamines like Ecstasy and cocaine. Other companies even include legal prescription drugs to be prepared for abuse of these substances, and they also include testing for alcohol.
Every person is different and so is every drug making drug testing a less-than-simple process when applied to the workplace where the working environment may add a third variable. Most drugs may be detected in the system from 2 – 4 days although for drugs like marijuana or PCP, traces may be detected up to 14 days in the case of chronic users. The newer and more expensive method of hair follicle drug testing can detect drug usage over a 90-day time frame. Valium and other sedatives may remain in the system for as long as a month.
The options open to persons who want to undergo a drug and alcohol test are to go to a testing center or to get drug test kits. The increase in the drug problem worldwide has led to a corresponding increase in drug testing as a way to avoid having to deal with the problem at home, in school or at work. Because drug testing is not easy, physically or psychologically, ways and means to make drug testing more convenient and acceptable is a major project for researchers, doctors and businessmen. This has led to the development of drug test kits which make it possible to do a drug and alcohol test in a do-it-yourself manner. The procedure for drug tests is established, regardless of where or how one wants to take the test and drug test kits operate according to these procedures.
On many occasions when parents, teachers, employers or individuals themselves find it necessary to have a drug test conducted without resorting to public testing centers, an at home drug test is the convenient alternative for a drug and alcohol test.
It is possible to conduct an at-home drug and alcohol test with the same methods used by official testing centers, with the exception of a blood test. An at home drug test can conduct a urine drug screen, a saliva or oral liquid drug screen, a hair follicle drug test and a sweat drug screen. These at home drug tests are available in kits from pharmacies or over the internet.
Testing for the presence of prohibited substances will include a drug and alcohol test as part of standard procedure. There are several types of drug tests, the major ones of which are a urine drug screen, hair follicle test, saliva drug screen, sweat drug screen and a blood test. Any one of these may be used for a drug and alcohol test.
In a urine drug screen, the person being tested is sent to a collection center where a sample of the person’s urine is placed in a tamper-proof container and sent to an accredited laboratory to be tested for the presence of drugs or alcohol. The results are reviewed by an independent physician and transmitted to a parent, potential employer or whoever ordered the drug and alcohol test.
